Telemedicine refers to the use of various telecommunications by physicians and medical institutions that provide health care to their patients through electronic or digital means. Telemedicine employs technology that makes it possible for health care providers toc are for their patients at remote areas. Telemedicine affords caregivers the ability to collect and transfer medical data, still images,
and live audio and video transmissions.
The advanced use of information and communication technology makes it possible for a single doctor to attend to more patients
than by depending on conventional methods while also making prescriptions on-line
The Government of Tanzania through the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology has nominated DIT to be the implementing agent for the Telemedicine Pilot Project “SETTING UP INDIA –TANZANIA CENTER OF EXECELLENCE IN ICT (ITCoEICT)’
The project aims at introducing telemedicine in Tanzania, and to develop best practices and a platform for awareness raising, knowledge exchange in the medical field. This Pilot project will enable the government to make more effective use of the few doctors available in the country
The DIT which is the Central site will be connected to other ten (10) community information center (CICs) through VSAT for provision of these services.
